TMJ or TMD stands for Temporomandibular Joint Dysfunction. With such a big title it sounds like a scary thing but the good news is that it is very treatable. TMJ is used to describe issues in the joints where your head and jaw meet.
Common symptoms are headaches, ear aches, and jaw aches, pain while chewing, locking or clicking jaws. If you notice any of these symptoms on a recurring basis come visit our office for a consultation.
How is TMJ caused?
TMJ is often caused by tooth or jaw injury, misaligned teeth, grinding or clenching of teeth, stress, arthritis, gum chewing, and locking of the jaw joint. It causes pain in your jaw joint and in the muscles that control jaw movement.
Sometimes a TMJ disorder can cause a clicking sound or grating sensation when you open your mouth or chew. If you have consistent pain or limited movement it is a good idea to give our office a call. We can help you find a treatment that works for you.
